EDM is an activity in charge of the management of electronic documents and more particularly, of all the different phases concerned with them.

The different I.T. techniques enable the following :
  to secure and to ease access to documents
  to manage modifications, electronic signatures
  publication, distribution/circulation
  filing, storage.

This can be done regardless of the type of electronic document (text, image, sound...)

These tools assist the search of information through existing documents, and improve productivity, for example, in administrative departments. EDM is often associated with the trade in question, in industry, notably in the design office, these tools are used to manage technical documents, plans, nomenclature, or indeed any other document associated with such projects.
The use of a database, the implementation of client/server architecture which improves exchange, validation, research of documents, have enabled companies to make optimum circulation and optimum volume of the company’s documents as a whole, either internal or external.
